A World of Difference

Welcome back to Term 3! After a very different Term 2 we were very excited to get back to our Immersion Assemblies to see what our inquiry is for this term.
This term we are travelling around the world. Different teams in our school covering things from different food, schools, languages and cultures from around the world.

In Team 5, our teachers performed a beautiful story about Sina and the Eel from Samoa. Mrs Tele'a explained that we were covering myths and legends from around the world. Specifically, we are looking at myths and legends that help to explain land forms, monuments or pieces of nature.

The story of Sina and the Eel goes like this. Once upon a time there was a beautiful girl named Sina. She befriended an Eel as she spent more time near the water.
As time went on, the Eel got bigger and bigger. He told stories of once being a handsome prince and one day they would live happily ever after. But as he grew bigger and stronger and his affection for Sina grew stronger, sadly Sina did not return this same feeling. She ran away to her relatives. However, as she was near the water, the Eel popped up everywhere she went.

She became frightened and ran to her uncle who ordered his son to deal with the Eel once and for all. The warrior sliced the eels head off. The eels dying wish was for Sina to bury his head in the ground. From that grew a coconut tree.

The coconuts have two eyes and a nose which resembles the face of the eel. This way, every time Sina would take a drink from the coconut, she would be kissing the eel. This is the story of how the coconut tree came about through the story of Sina and the Eel.

Life's a Stage

Immersion Assembly for Term 4 was definitely an entertaining one with a dance and drama focus. Our inquiry this term is 'Life's a Stage'. Here are Team 5 teachers doing their best to entertain and act coordinated. We are covering dance in our afternoons learning about different styles of dancing from around the world. In our literacy classes we are covering drama in short skits and acting out different fairy tales with our own spin on it. We were quite proud of our team of teachers in Team 5 for getting up on stage and giving it a go.

Looking at cells!

This term Team 5's science inquiry is about Genomics which is biology looking at cell structures, DNA, sequencing and how all living things are connected.
We've finally got up to the part where we learn about human cells and the nerve system. Here is a short video clip that our Team 5 teachers did as part of our immersion assembly at the start of the term. By the end of this term, we hope to know this off by heart.

Term 3 Immersion Assembly: There's something in the water

THE WONDERS OF THE OCEAN
(Point England search the sea)
This year us kids at Point England School are going to explore the ocean as well as cells. There are many things to explore, many things to be wowed about & many things to be excited for.

The beginning of the journey- On Monday 22th of July Point England had an immersion assembly. As the second school bell rang many kids came walking into the hall. Our Theme for term 3 was Something in the water or translated in Maori "He mea i roto i te wai". They were confused as our principal, two other teachers & our school prefects were cooking seafood for all the kids & teacher that would like some. There were prawns & different type of fish to eat. They we very delicious.

The movies of the sea- There were many videos that were presented as we ate. Team 1 had an amazing video. Team 1's video was about S.O.F.A which stands for solution of animals.  There movie was about the endangered animals that lived in the sea down at Point England beach. There were different types of animals facts in the videos.

Team 2's Movie was about animals, trees & plants. There was different types of animals that they were looking at such as seagull, ducks, chickens and many other sea creatures. There were also looking at a Pohutukawa tree. My favourite part was the ending when one of the teacher name Miss Moran. She was so hungry & bored that she asked if she could go online to Uber Eats & get some KFC.

Team 3's movie was about a stronger independent women who wanted to look for a sea creatures that loved the sea & all the animals in it. She searched & searched then came a eel she asked "are you the one I am looking for the one who can look after our animals in the sea" the eel replied " yes I can swim all the way to Tonga & back real fast " She said no I don't need someone like you. She talked to many animals but they were not what she needed until she came across a strong, wise creature. She asked him the same question it replied I have been a look out for ships, humans & our animals. I want to protect our ocean from any harm. You are the one we can work together to look after our ocean & animals.

Team 4's movie was about different things that live in the ocean including what animals eat & what we eat. There were plantains, mussels, crabs & seagull. We learnt that plantains get eaten from mussels & mussels get eaten from crabs. The crabs get eaten by seagulls but the weird part is that humans eat the seagulls anyways. Team 4 have been learning about different animals they see in the sea & compare to what they eat & what eat them.

Team 5 Had a song that they had made up into one big thing about what we would be learning about this term. The song was about cells & what was in them. There were nucleus, genes, DNA & chromosomes each & all of these were in cells. Team 5 was going to be learning about science - Genomics & the origins of life.

Welcome back to 'Musical Madness' Term 4!

Immersion Assembly

Yesterday morning was the first day of term 4 (16/10/17). It was that time of the day when team 5 had to met in the street to do our usual routine. We did our mihi and karakia, as always. Then Mrs Tele'a explained about our day. It was 9 o'clock and we filed out in our GB lines (girl/boy) into the hall from the street. We were finally seated in the hall and the assembly began.

We were greeted with a song from Mr Burt, Mr Jacobson, Mrs Nua, Mr Somerville, and Mr Wiseman called musical madness. They played instruments and sang at the same time. As some of you know, the theme for this term is Musical Madness, so they sang a song about music. After the song, Mr Burt announced to the school that it was time for team 1 to perform.

So the teachers in team 1 are Ms Hockley, Mrs Lal, Miss Szymanik, Mrs Dwyer, Mrs Squires, and a teacher who will be with them for 4 weeks, and her name is Miss Clark. In their performance they were playing a game of snap! While they were playing they had music on. Their main purpose was to show how music can change your feelings and emotions. For example they played The Last Post (Anzac music). It made them feel sad because of the people who died in Anzac.

It was time for team 2's item. The teachers in team 2 are Mrs Tumahai, Miss Peck, Mrs Gaston, and Miss Nalder. They sang a song. The song was In The Jungle. They also used instruments. Mrs Gaston sang and played the ukulele at the same time. Mrs Nalder used a Bongo drum. Mrs Tumahai played a xylophone, and Miss Peck played a little instrument that sounded like a tambourine.

Team 3, it was time for the teachers in team 3 to perform. The teachers in team 3 are Mr Moran, Miss King, Miss Davis, Miss Eddie, and Mrs Moala. They didn't perform, they made a video. Their video was Songs In Real Life. They used different songs to define what they are saying. It was really funny and also entertaining. It was one of my highlights of the Immersion Assembly.

Mr Somerville, Mr Goodwin, Miss Parrant, Miss Scanlan, Miss West, and Mrs Buchanan are the teachers in team 4. They also made a video clip instead of performing. Their movie was about riding to school in a car listening to music. Kind of like carpool karaoke. They also expressed their feelings when they were listening to songs. This was also one of my favourites. I was very interested in their movie.

And finally, the last but not least, team 5! These teachers are the teachers of the seniors. They are Mrs Tele'a, Mrs Ilaoa, Mr Wiseman, Whaea Kelly (Who replaced the beautiful Mrs Judd), and Ms Tapuke. Their performance was about how music and sounds can change the way of the movie. They used a clip from The Lion King, and used different songs and sounds to show how it can easily change the feeling and mood.
