Mana Tu, Mitey You - Mophead

Today we learnt about different words which were Identity, Unique, Culture and Bully. We first rotated around to each paper with one word written on each paper and wrote down as many words that come to your head when you hear or look at the word. Next we did a freeze frame, what we did for the freeze frame was our teacher would have given us a word from the four that we described about and our group had to do a freeze frame without moving just staying still and these were my groups photos.

Our unique freeze frame is based on our unique height and different skin colour

Our identity freeze frame is based on what we look like.

Our culture freeze frame is based on what culture we were - Samoan, Tongan and Maori

And last our bully freeze frame was based on one girl feeling sad while everybody else is just laughing at her.

Year 7 & 8 Tongan Language Week Resource

This year, Tongan Language Week was celebrated from our homes due to the Covid19 Level 4 Lockdown.

Miss West worked alongside Miss Shaniah and a group of Tongan year 7 & 8 students to create some amazing Tongan resources for us to share on the news and to keep for years to come.

We met online as one of the Team 5 online electives and created this amazing plan together to gather our ideas:

We then went away and the amazing year 7 & 8 children as well as a few of our PES staff, created these resources from home:

Healthy me, healthy you!

Kia ora everyone! Welcome back to term 3. At our immersion assembly we found out what our topic is this term. The super duper team 5 teachers performed an amazing skit of the Olympics. Very excited to say that our topic is 'Healthy Me! Healthy you!'. Room 2 were very inspired during our whole school immersion assembly and put together lots of their thoughts and ideas regarding our health.

This topic is all about the importance of staying healthy and for our first inquiry task room 2 we thought of some answers to a simple question. The question was 'What does it mean to be healthy?'. Using our knowledge of the topic we shared our answers on our blog. Check them out!

Here is a detailed explanation of Militina's understanding of what it means to be healthy. The model Whare Tapa Wha is incorporated in his description. We hope you can all learn a thing or two and even take the initiative to be more healthy today! Enjoy!

Being healthy has 3 meanings that correspond to having a balanced and content life. Being healthy physically , spiritually and mentally are all the 3 areas you need to balance. We will go one by one and I’ll explain the 3 areas.

Being fit physically is to ensure that you can live longer. There are many diets for what you want to accomplish with your body. For instance low carbs , high carbs and high protein diets are just a few examples of beneficial diets. Before you exercise make sure that you have a clear mind of what you want to accomplish with the diet you choose. Also make sure that you are exercising for yourself and not for other people. Comparing yourself to other people will lower your self esteem and can discourage you from reaching your goals. In the start what you can do to be more healthy is to have more healthy alternatives of whatever you already enjoy eating. For example if you like sweet things try some yoghurt , if you like meat cook some more boiled variations. Having more healthy alternatives will satisfy any craving you have and little by little you’ll see improvements. Being healthier doesn’t come overnight, it is a lifestyle you have to commit to. Remember to always have a few treats every now and then however focus on your diet and try not to fold.

Spiritual fitness is essential for your well being, As much as physical fitness is beneficial your spiritual fitness helps you keep on going. With the aid of Christ and the lord above along with the holy spirit they will fuel you with the power to keep on pushing on. Everyone has their insecurities and things they're not happy with so by confessing these things will help you remove the weight from the shoulders. If your spiritual fitness is not full and healthy then your physical fitness will suffer dramatically. Without proper motivation then you will never be able to pursue your fitness dreams. So make sure to take care of your spiritual well being as well as your physical as you’ll achieve much more with it.

Next we have your mental fitness which is just as important as your spiritual and physical fitness. Your spiritual fitness ties in with your mental well being as without a strong mind your spiritual fitness will neve be healthy. Without your mental fitness your spiritual fitness will never be there as you have to mentally commit to your spiritual fitness as well as your physical fitness. Without your  mental fortitude you will never exercise and without strong belief your spiritual well being will be weak and frail. You are only as strong as your weakest link so you need to strengthen your mental fitness as it is the main component of your fitness. It fuels your physical and mental fitness so you have to fuel it the most as it contributes to the success of the other two areas.

You need mental , physical and spiritual fitness in order to live a happy and humble life. Don’t expect immediate results, it takes time however if you practise with all these areas of fitness then you will see results. Fitness is a hard and gruelling journey that we all start somewhere however with perseverance and hard work you can achieve anything.

ANZAC day animations

As we learn more about the conditions of war during ANZAC time, we are using the skills we learnt from the cybersmart challenges to re-create some of the newspaper articles described in the Herald's special editions celebrating 100 years back in 2015. Here is my animation of a sniper in action. By Melzalone

PES Value for 2021

Each year, Pt England has a value on which we focus on throughout the year. Last year was a bout HOPE (and what a fitting year that was) Kia mau tonu te tumanako - Never lose hope!

This year is about Tiaki Taonga - Cherish our Treasures.
The can be used in many settings and apply to different circumstances. The point is we want our tamariki to cherish what they have. Whether it be the opportunity to learn, the family they have, or the digital affordances we are blessed to have in our school.

We look forward to sharing more throughout this year. Tiaki Taonga!

Art Alive!

This week is our first week of term 4, I'm looking forward to all that's happening but also quite sad since it's my last term here at Pt England School.

Like any other normal immersion assembly's on Monday each team got to present by film/play what they are going to be doing this term. Almost every team presented a video except for team 5 (like normal). Our theme for this term is 'Art Alive' we will be looking at different ways of art. Term 4 is gonna be the term of art!

My favourite two teams were team 5 (not being biased) and team 1. Team 5 had a play where it was based at the museum the teachers acted as art pieces and explained what each art piece meant. Team 1 was a video of the teachers recreating famous art pieces.

I will be looking forward to all of the art related lessons throughout this term! :D

Our 'moment' - Celebrating Maori Language Week

In 1972 - 30 000 signatures were presented to parliament in a bid to safeguard Te Reo Maori. Today we joined the rest of the nation in remembering and celebrating this moment in NZ history - with Maori being one of New Zealand's 3 official languages.

To celebrate this moment, we stood and sang 'E Ihoa' and 'Tutira mai' with Whaea Maryanne as a whole school @ 12pm. We also celebrated by writing a kupu/word we know in Maori and sharing it with the class. Check out our 30sec video to celebrate this moment.

How Tongans keep their traditions alive

Our reading this week is all based around Tongan texts. One of them was Ngatu: Keeping the tradition alive. Here are 5 things I learnt from that text.

Task Description: Like I said on my recent blog posts you may have found out that it is Tongan language week. As our focus for this weeks reading we had to read a book that was related to this weeks special occasion and was called, "Keep the traditions alive" . We had to find 5 things we found help Tongan people keep the traditions alive.

Welcome to Tongan Language week!

Task Description: Some may not know but this week it is Tongan language week! Tonga is a little island in the pacific region that lies within  the biggest ocean in the world together following with Samoa, Fiji Niue and more. I am gladly proud to say I am Tongan but a proud one that lives in New Zealand but still takes her culture as a priority. This week is very important for me and for my fellow Tongans as it is a week of celebrating the place where our ancestors came from. It's also a time of learn about our culture and it's history. The reason why it's called Tongan languages because we are trying to keep the culture going even in this modern time. I'm way more excited because of all the stuff I 've heard we are going to be learning this week. Together with our math, reading and writing we have something that relates to this weeks special occasion. ! " HAPPY TONGAN LANGUAGE WEEK EVERYONE" !

Year 7 Step Up Programme

In week 3 our Year 8 students went off to leadership camp. While they were gone, our Year 7 students took part in our Y7 Step Up programme. The aim of this programme was to encourage our Y7 students to step up as leaders and sometimes this means stepping out of their comfort zone. Students were split into 3 groups: Strikers, Duck Life and Team Thunder. Upon their reflections, the team leaders shared how they got to mix and mingle with students they would not have normally worked with and this helped to build relationships across the year level and make new friends.

Some of the activities we did were solving murder mysteries, art and minute to win it games. It was great to see teams working together and supporting each other throughout the three days. Here is a little snippet of some of the fun we had. Keep stepping up Year 7's!

Team 5 Garage Sale 2020

Next week is our Year 8 camp so to fundraise, we held a garage sale in the weekend. We had a variety of things to sell from our very popular bake sale, Mrs Flavelle's bric a brac table as well as our usual cheese toasties, hot dogs and hot and cold drinks sale.
We were also joined by many other vendors who packed out our hall with many different things to buy. Sands and Talitha groups had a lolly stall as well as chop suey and potato salad, Whaea Saff had deliciously hot mussel chowder and fried bread and even Team 4 teachers had a stall! They were selling yummy pulled pork buns and waffles.

Mrs Ilaoa's sister had beautiful succulent plants and Tamaki College had clocks that students made out of vinyl CD's.

Overall a very successful day for our Team 5 campers and a great day connecting with our community. Thank you to everyone who contributed to our bake sale and who came along to buy lots of goodies.

A World of Difference

Welcome back to Term 3! After a very different Term 2 we were very excited to get back to our Immersion Assemblies to see what our inquiry is for this term.
This term we are travelling around the world. Different teams in our school covering things from different food, schools, languages and cultures from around the world.

In Team 5, our teachers performed a beautiful story about Sina and the Eel from Samoa. Mrs Tele'a explained that we were covering myths and legends from around the world. Specifically, we are looking at myths and legends that help to explain land forms, monuments or pieces of nature.

The story of Sina and the Eel goes like this. Once upon a time there was a beautiful girl named Sina. She befriended an Eel as she spent more time near the water.
As time went on, the Eel got bigger and bigger. He told stories of once being a handsome prince and one day they would live happily ever after. But as he grew bigger and stronger and his affection for Sina grew stronger, sadly Sina did not return this same feeling. She ran away to her relatives. However, as she was near the water, the Eel popped up everywhere she went.

She became frightened and ran to her uncle who ordered his son to deal with the Eel once and for all. The warrior sliced the eels head off. The eels dying wish was for Sina to bury his head in the ground. From that grew a coconut tree.

The coconuts have two eyes and a nose which resembles the face of the eel. This way, every time Sina would take a drink from the coconut, she would be kissing the eel. This is the story of how the coconut tree came about through the story of Sina and the Eel.

T2W10: Inquiry - What is the Biosphere?

Task Description: Sorry for not posting an inquiry for last week but here it is. The sphere we have from last week is Biosphere and that is what I will be sharing with you. Inquiry for the week is going to be doing the one from last week and here it is. This week the inquiry was based on the Biosphere, one of the four spheres. I've learn't so much about the biosphere such as what the biosphere is and all that stuff. I've also learn't a little Greek word and that is life. The word bio from biosphere in Greek is life. That was a bit of a little learning experience for me and how to say life in Greek.
